At the Mike Kelly Law Group, we do not ordinarily express ours views in political issues, but we believe the upcoming election, on November 2, 2010, is crucial to the well-being of the clients we serve. We believe the decision may be one of the most important of our lifetimes. Our state is hurting. We are faced with high unemployment. The funding for our police, firemen, schools, and health care has already been cut to the bone and massive layoffs darken our future. How did we get in this mess? For eight years we had Mark Sanford, a Republican governor, who said he would be responsible with our tax dollars but whose failed policies have left us with a one billion dollar budget shortfall. Mark Sanford, the same man who promised to protect family values but, in reality, made our state the laughing stock of late night television. A Republican has controlled the governor’s mansion for the past 8 years and 20 out of 24 years. The last thing we need is more of the same. We need substance, not “sound bites,” and we do not need more empty promises like the ones that got us into the mess we are currently in.
I, like Vincent Sheheen, was born and raised in Camden, South Carolina. I knew members of the Sheheen family during my childhood. I can assure you Vincent Sheheen knows South Carolina. He is the fourth generation of his family to make Camden his home. His great grandfather ran the grocery and feed store. His grandfather ran the family business and was elected mayor. His mother taught public school while his father served as our Commissioner of Higher Education. Vincent and his wife Amy, live in Camden with their three sons who go to the same public schools Vincent went to 25 years ago.
The people who know Vincent Sheheen best, come from South Carolina’s Heartland. They don’t talk South Carolina Values, they live them every day. They judge a man by what he does, not what he says. They value hard work, commitment to family, church, community and state. They have trusted and voted for Vincent Sheheen year after year because he got the job done, working with Republicans and Democrats alike for real change in South Carolina, and did not focus on gaining attention on national television.
Vincent Sheheen doesn’t just talk, he works to get things done. He doesn’t just talk about being open with voters, he gave copies of his tax returns for the past 10 years. His opponent, Nikki Haley, an accountant, tried to hide her tax returns because she didn’t pay her taxes on time. Vincent doesn’t just talk about creating jobs, he has earned the support of the South Carolina Chamber of Commerce for his work bringing new jobs to our state and helping small businesses. Nikki Haley wants to give $500 million away to corporations by taxing our groceries, as opposed to their profits. Vincent doesn’t just talk about supporting public education, he send his children to public schools. His opponent favors getting rid of the Department of Education and giving more money away to privileged kids so they can attend private schools. Vincent doesn’t just talk about tax reform, he has worked to reform our tax system from top to bottom and to close tax loopholes. Vincent doesn’t just talk about reducing costs to business, he has worked with Republicans and Democrats to bring about change that is already lowering the costs of workers’ compensation insurance for the first time in 10 years. His opponent wants to dismantle the Workers’ Compensation Commission that has served and protected our employers and workers for 75 years.
At the Mike Kelly Law Group, we aren’t just lawyers, we are a small business. We employ approximately 40 people who have families and children and who care deeply about our community, our state, and protecting our southern traditions. We strongly urge you to learn more about Vincent Sheheen by visiting by his web page at www.vincentsheheen.com. The more you know the more you will want to join with us to elect Vincent Sheheen our new governor on November 2nd. A new
leader for real change – substance not “sound bites.”
For regular readers of our blog, you do not have to worry about our blog becoming a political forum.
